Ester quats have replaced dialkyldimethylammonium salts, such as DTDMAC and DSDMAC. They have a good environmental profile and the structural features required for an effective fabric conditioner. The ester linkages in the aliphatic chains have improved the biodegradation of the cationic surfactants, which lowers environmental exposure levels. Ester quats can be used in hair care products and can deliver comparable or better performance to traditional alkyl quats, such as centrimonium chloride (CTAC). Ester quats can also be a more sustainable option for brands.
